Homemade A1Steak Sauce mixed in with Photos of The Wind Turbine Hike

In New Zealand they don’t allow the food ingredients that we allow in the United States.  Thus, there is no A1 Steak Sauce, a family favorite.  Here is why it’s banned from NZ:

In the past, while living in the US, I tried finding the right steak sauce without all this garbage: high fructose corn syrup, food starch-modifier, soybean oil, hydrolyzed corn and soy proteins, artificial flavor, camel color, yellow 6, red 40 , blue 1.  It never occurred to me to make my own.  Now that we live in NZ and there is no steak sauce, I researched and made the IDENTICAL A1 steak sauce minus the garbage.  A huge hit, thanks to the Recipe Created by Two dogs in the kitchen.

Time to make this: 1 Minute to assemble and 15 Minutes to simmer.

This is a great recipe that the kids can make, even if its just the measuring part.  Get them involved and helping in the kitchen.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 c. cold water
  • 1/4 c. golden raisins
  • 1/2 c. aged balsamic vinegar (Red Wine Vinegar works too)
  • 1/4 c. worcestershire sauce (buy color and preservative free)
  • 1/4 c. ketchup (high fructose corn syrup free)
  • 1/4 c. dijon mustard (no substitutions)
  • 1/4 t. black pepper
  • 1 garlic clove cut in half
  • 1/2 t. celery seed
  • 1/4 t. himalayan salt
  • 1/4 -1/2 of orange

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Place all items except orange in sauce pan.
  2. Squeeze 1/4 or 1/2 of orange into sauce (depending on how sweet you like your sauce).  I went with 1/4 and it was perfect for my family.  Then add the squeezed 1/4 or 1/2 to pan.
  3. Mix well
  4. Simmer for 15min on low heat.  You only want tiny bubbles on edges, otherwise it will get too thick
  5. Strain the sauce and discard solids.
  6. Do not blend items.
  7. Let it cool completely before serving or adding more seasoning.

Yield 1 3/4 cups of delicious goodness.  Store bought A1Sauce never again!!!!!

My 10year old’s thoughts on the Sauce:  This is so good, but I don’t understand why they put food colouring in A1 Sauce, when the sauce is already brown?  Me neither.

While the sauce is simmering, enjoy pictures from our recent Tramp (Hike) to the Wind Turbine in Wellington, New Zealand.
